Stainless Steel 440C is a high-carbon martensitic stainless steel that contains about 1.0–1.2% carbon, 16–18% chromium, along with trace amounts of manganese, silicon, and molybdenum. It can be heat-treated to achieve a Rockwell hardness of 58–60 HRC, providing outstanding wear resistance and a tensile strength of around 285,000 psi when hardened. While it may not resist corrosion as well as austenitic grades, it performs admirably in mild environments. 440C is known for its excellent strength and moderate toughness, making it suitable for machining and heat treatment.
