4340 Steel is a nickel-chromium-molybdenum alloy steel that exhibits high toughness, strength, and resistance to wear. Its standard composition contains 0.38–0.43% carbon, 1.65–2.00% nickel, 0.70–0.90% chromium, 0.20–0.30% molybdenum, and manganese, silicon, and trace elements. After being heat-treated, 4340 steel has tensile strength of 745–850 MPa, yield strength of 415–725 MPa, elongation of 18–22%, and hardness of 28–34 HRC. It retains performance under high stress, fatigue, and impact, and thus is a material of choice for structural components in high-pressure and high-load conditions.
