Aluminium 2017 contains about 3.5–4.5% copper, 0.4–0.8% manganese, 0.4–0.8% magnesium, and trace amounts of iron, silicon, and zinc. It possesses a tensile strength of 70–78 ksi, yield strength of around 40–50 ksi, and elongation of 10–15%, depending upon temper. The alloy possesses high fatigue life and good mechanical properties for T4 and T6 tempers. Though its corrosion properties are inferior to other aluminum alloys, it is good when surface-treated. Aluminium 2017 is heat-treatable and is ideal for strength-to-weight optimized applications.
