Mu-Metal is a nickel-iron soft magnetic alloy, typically made up of about 77–80% nickel, 15% iron, along with small amounts of copper (4–5%) and molybdenum (2–5%). This special blend gives Mu-Metal its incredibly high magnetic permeability, low coercive force, and impressive shielding abilities against low-frequency magnetic fields. On the mechanical side, Mu-Metal has moderate tensile strength (around 500–600 MPa), can elongate up to 30%, and is relatively soft, which makes it easy to shape and work with. To keep its properties at their best, Mu-Metal sheets and plates often go through hydrogen annealing after they’re formed, boosting their magnetic performance.
